Massachusetts State Building Code Update

As you may know by now, the 10th Edition of the Massachusetts State Building Code (780 CMR) is finally here which is an amended version of The 2021 International Building Code (IBC). The amendments to the 2021 IBC that were accepted by the Board of Building Regulations and Standards (BBRS) can be found here: https://www.mass.gov/doc/draft-tenth-edition-of-the-ma-state-building-code-780/download

Several weeks ago, The Board of Building Regulations and Standards determined that the 10th Edition would officially go into effect on October 11, 2024. They approved a concurrency period from October 11 through January 1, 2025, where projects can either be permitted under the 9th Edition or the new 10th Edition.

However, on October 21st a special meeting of the BBRS was held to discuss this concurrency period. It was at that meeting where it was agreed upon that the concurrency period would extend to June 30, 2025. While this will not be official until various State agencies approve it, it appears the concurrency period will be extended. This gives projects currently under design a little more breathing room if they wish to be permitted under the 9th Edition of 780 CMR.
